The Ascension...After living through the joy of Pascha, we may feel a certain heaviness of heart on Ascension Day. It seems like a parting or a separation from the Lord. We may feel the Lord is not with us in the same way any longer. It is interesting that the disciples, the Lord’s closest friends, did not react like this. Instead of being overwhelmed with grief they “returned to Jerusalem with great joy”. Why does the Ascension bring joy to Christians? First, the Ascension is the crown of the Lord’s earthly mission. He has accomplished the whole earthly mission that He received from His Father. The Ascension marks God’s acceptance of the Son’s work of reparation. The cloud that envelops and ascends with Jesus to heaven represents the sacrifice rising from the altar to God. On this day both true God and true man enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Jesus opens the doors of the kingdom to humanity. He makes us sit together “in heavenly places in Jesus Christ.”(Ephesians 2:6)  The Ascension makes thoughts of heaven more accessible to us. When the disciples were separated from Jesus, they remained full of hope. They knew they were to receive the Holy Spirit just ten days later. Good news!

Youth Proclaim Christ Sunday…Today we thank our youth as they proclaim Christ in serving the Church. Our young people will assist in ushering, collecting the gifts, reading the Epistle, presenting their oratorical festival winning entries, assisting at the candles stands, singing in the choir and serving as altar boys. We are proud of our children and all that they do to serve in the life and worship of the Church.

5K Family Run and Walk…was held last Saturday. Heartfelt thanks to Lou Kafkes, our race director, and the many GOYA volunteers and participants that made 5K a success. Walkers and runners braved the rain and cool temperatures to raise money for the Philoxenia House at Mayo Clinic, MN. Thanks to the great generosity of our sponsors and participants we raised $6,000 for this worthy cause! We have T-shirts and gift bags today for the registered runners and sponsors that were not able to attend. Opportunities to donate to the Philoxenia House are also available. We look forward to next year!
